Dr. Laura Ansell
I grew up in Okotoks, Alberta, and completed a BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience, followed by both a PhD in Neuroscience and my MD at the University of Calgary. While I greatly valued my time in academia, it was ultimately the clinical work in neurology that drew me to residency. I found deep meaning in connecting with patients, and I’m excited to continue building a career that blends my academic background with a focus on clinical care.
What I love most about neurology is how much of the specialty rests on communication, careful examination, and developing long-term relationships grounded in trust. My approach is patient-centered and empathetic, and I try to bring a bit of humour when it feels right. I will be pursuing a fellowship in Behavioural Neurology & Neuropsychiatry in Calgary after residency, with the goal of providing both general and behavioural neurology services in the community and within AHS. The interdisciplinary nature of behavioural neurology, particularly its overlap with psychiatry, is a major source of inspiration for me.
Outside of medicine, I share a full and joyful life with my husband Nick, our son, and our dog. We love to travel, cook and try new restaurants, explore cocktail bars, and unwind with reality TV or video games. Staying active and enjoying all that Calgary and the surrounding area have to offer is a big part of our lives, and I feel grateful to call this place home.
